v1.16.0 — split & merge detection 2026-09-08
- split paragraphs are now detected and shown as a single "Split" change: the pieces render normally with a paragraph mark (¶) at each seam instead of a struck clause plus a re-typed paragraph.
- merged paragraphs likewise group into one "Merge" change with a struck paragraph mark at the former boundary.
- new Splits and Merges categories in the summary and change navigator, on screen and in the PDF.
- documents without splits or merges render identically to v1.15.0.
earlier releases
v1.15.0 — list renumbering detection 2026-08-26
- list items whose effective number changes between versions are now detected. The old number appears struck through next to the new number, the same way changed text is marked, on screen and in the PDF.
- renumbered items form their own "Numbering" category, with their own entries in the change navigator, so they are easy to find and step through alongside other changes.
- a new "Count renumbering in total" option (checked by default) controls whether a renumbered item counts toward the total change count and appears in the navigator; turning it off leaves the marker visible but out of the count.
- a margin change bar now marks a renumbered line, the same as any other kind of change.
v1.14.1 — header border & style formatting fixes 2026-08-26
- one separator rule under a compared header, not two (word's border grouping)
- size, italics, font and colour from named paragraph styles now render
- pages view no longer shows a "page break" divider — the page boundary is the break
v1.14.0 — page chrome fidelity & pagination fix 2026-08-25
- pages view now breaks pages the way the pdf and word do — fixed a measurement fault that doubled paragraph heights and inflated the page count.
- live page numbers: PAGE / NUMPAGES fields in headers and footers, on screen and in the pdf.
- headers and footers render with their true formatting (size, italics, font, colour), and the separator line under a header is drawn.
v1.13.0 — in-place comments & endnote flow 2026-08-25
- comments appear as margin bubbles beside the paragraph they annotate, in both views and the pdf (author, date, anchored text, redlined comment).
- new "comments" toggle in the show panel (remembered between sessions); bubbles obey the insertion / deletion / unchanged filters.
- endnotes now flow after the last paragraph the way word displays them.
v1.12.0 — pages view fidelity 2026-08-24
- page view shows body text in the document's own font, matching the printed output.
- headers and footers honour their paragraph alignment, so centred and right-aligned headers render correctly.
v1.11.2 — cover page header fix 2026-08-24
- the header and footer set for a cover page appear on page one again — the "different first page" setting was being read from the wrong section.
v1.11.1 — header & footer fixes 2026-08-24
- headers and footers word itself never shows are no longer collected into a section at the end of the document.
- a header or footer identical in both documents stays on every page when unchanged text is hidden.
v1.11.0 — in-place headers & footers 2026-08-19
- headers and footers render on the page — top and bottom of every sheet — in the page view and the pdf, using the document's own font.
- which variant shows follows word's "different first page" and odd/even rules; a header taller than the top margin pushes body text down instead of overlapping it.
v1.10.1 — pages hardening 2026-08-19
- if building the page view fails partway, the app falls back to the continuous view with the complete document intact.
- a formatting-only change in a footnote, endnote, header, footer or comment stays visible when unchanged text is hidden.
v1.10.0 — per-page footnotes 2026-08-18
- pages view floats each footnote to the bottom of the page that holds its reference, matching the pdf; orphan footnotes collect on the last page.
v1.9.0 — page view 2026-08-18
- the redline is shown as separate, numbered pages using the document's own page size, margins and font, following word's page-break rules.
- a new view setting switches between pages and continuous (remembered); hiding unchanged text no longer renumbers the pages.
v1.8.1 — footnote reference fix 2026-08-18
- footnote and endnote reference marks always render as small superscript numbers (no raw "footnote:16" text).
- a footnote word merely renumbered is no longer reported as a change.
v1.8.0 — comment comparison 2026-08-17
- comments (comments.xml) are compared too — author, date, initials, and the anchored text — in an uncounted comments section by default.
- new "count comments in total" toggle folds comment changes into the change total and the change x of y navigation.
v1.7.0 — header & footer comparison 2026-08-16
- headers and footers are compared, not just the body — edits, insertions and deletions inside them are detected and count in the change total.
- default, first-page and even-page variants are distinguished and compared separately, on screen and in the pdf.
v1.6.0 — footnote & endnote comparison 2026-08-16
- footnotes and endnotes are compared, not just the body, and count in the change total.
- the pdf places footnotes at the foot of their page and endnotes in a trailing section, each with the margin change bar.
v1.5.0 — configurable rendering sets 2026-08-15
- new "rendering set" picker (remembered): sorkwhare, litera classic, and high contrast.
- litera classic = blue double-underlined insertions / red struck-through deletions; high contrast uses colour-vision-safe colours with a distinct underline per change type.
v1.4.1 — dense-rewrite grouping 2026-08-15
- a reworded phrase that keeps a short joining word ("of", "and") shows as one struck phrase followed by one inserted phrase, instead of being chopped around the shared word.
v1.4.0 — vertical change bars 2026-08-15
- a vertical change bar appears in the left margin beside every changed line, on screen and in the pdf — the revision bar professional redline tools use.
- formatting-only changes get a bar too; it follows the formatting filter.
v1.3.2 — formatting change detection 2026-08-14
- formatting-only changes (bold, italic, underline, font, size) are caught with a dotted underline and a hover note; shown but not counted.
- new "formatting" show/hide filter; in the pdf each change is annotated inline (e.g. "[formatting: bold added]").
v1.3.1 — hardening release 2026-08-14
- fixes for ragged tables, page breaks inside cells, over-collapsed bold rewrites, "at least" line spacing, and page-fit estimates.
- error messages are escaped, so a document's file name can never inject markup into the app.
v1.3.0 — redline quality release 2026-08-14
- tables are real tables: bordered grids on screen, in print, and in the pdf (pages break between rows, never through one).
- rewritten passages read like workshare; money, dates and quantities replace whole ($486,000 → $528,000 as one clean change).
- benchmarked against an external workshare test pair: all 40 substantive changes detected.
v1.2.0 — pdf fidelity release 2026-08-13
- native pdf renders in the document's real font with correct measurements — not everything-is-times anymore.
- real paragraph and line spacing drives layout on screen, in print, and in the pdf; disciplined page breaks keep headings with their body text.
v1.1.5 — robustness release 2026-08-13
- project is now a git repository (baseline tagged v1.1.4); proper semver from here on.
- diff engine rebuilt for bounded memory — 10,000-paragraph compares no longer risk a tab crash — with faster paragraph pairing.
- "total" counts unique numbered changes and agrees with change x of y; xml entity decoding fixed; warns on unaccepted tracked changes; node test suite (30 checks).
v1.1.4 — branding: new logo + "hecksoft" 2026-07-30
- new pixel-art crowned-skull logo, hand-built as a self-contained inline svg (no external assets); company line renamed hecknet → hecksoft.
- no engine changes — this is the git baseline; earlier v1.0.x / v0.x builds predate the repository.
25 tagged releases, v1.1.4 → v1.16.0. earlier builds (v1.0.x and the pre-1.0 "doccompare" line) predate the git repository and aren't tagged. succeeded by calandria (v2.x).
